When it comes to style, black ladies have a certain magic about us. Whether it's our best-kept beauty secrets or elegant sense of fashion, we're known for setting the trends. To keep you looking and feeling great, here are the best style tips for African-American ladies.

When It Comes To Hair, Take The Bloggers With A Grain Of Salt

When it comes to black hair, it seems like just about every publication is continually declaring what black women should or shouldn't be doing. One month natural hair is in, the next month it's time for the big chop and weeks later they're saying that chemical treatments are back in vogue. Sure, it can be fun to follow trends or to model your hair after a celebrity’s style, but ultimately, you got to trust your gut when it comes to your own hair. Some of us just look better with certain styles, and this season’s trend isn’t going to change that.

For those looking for a relaxed structure to their hair, remember the two cardinal commandments: hydration and relaxation. Sadly, I don’t mean drinking mineral water and going to the spa - although I’m a huge fan of both of those things! No, I’m talking about hair care. For hydration, my favorite product is Shae Moisture’s balancing conditioner. And I’ve never had bad luck with any of these relaxers. The trick to maintaining moisture and relaxation is showering only as needed - probably once every other day, in most climates.

For natural styles, try to wear styles that don’t require combing - such as braids or cornrows. When you do comb, use a wide-tooth comb together with a detangler, so you don’t pull or damage your hair. I like using a Magic Star comb and a Tangle Teaser. And again, moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize.

Lotion Is Not The Be-All-And-End-All Of Hydration

You're not likely to find a black girl who doesn't love her lotion. Frequent lotion use is our best-kept beauty secret. But while moisturizer is excellent and there are tons of brands out there that make superb products, creams are not the only option you have for hydration. If you want to mix up your routine, try a body oil. Nyraju has a moisturizing Jojoba oil that I like. Alternatively, you can go natural and use pure coconut oil. For extra hydration, apply oil when you step out of the shower, and your skin is still slightly damp.

Mix Up Your Fashion Game

You can be the most stylish woman in your neighborhood, but you still might feel like your wardrobe has gotten stale from time to time. When this happens in my house, we call it “Thursday.” It's great to have a personal sense of style, and fashion is meant to be fun. If you feel like your look has gotten old, don't be afraid to mix it up. If you're known for your trademark hoops, try a pair of sparkly studs. If you always have a sleek and professional style, hit up a vintage store or quirky boutique and try a dress that's out of your comfort zone. Skinny Hipster has been trying to bring these fashions into prominence for a while now, and I say bravo!

Even the most stylish and glam among us occasionally need some new style and beauty tips. If you want to look and feel your best, incorporate these tips into your daily routine.
